In 1924 the Borough of Newport presented the newly formed Isle Of Wight Musical Competition Festival, our old name, with a Challenge Shield for the winner of the Primary School choir class. Brading C. E. School were the winners that first year and Nine Acres School won it last year. It has been used for every Festival since but there is now no space left for the winner’s names and it is also cracked.
The present Newport Parish Council have been kind enough to present a replacement Newport Parish Council Challenge Shield. The large wooden shield, and the silver plated plaque mounted on it, were both specially commissioned from local craftsmen.
The Shield was officially handed over by the Council Chairman, Julie Jones-Evans, to Barry Allen, Chairman of the Isle of Wight Music, Dance and Drama Festival, at the beginning of this month’s Council meeting. Barry Allen returned the retired 1924 Shield to the Council for safe keeping.
The Council Chairman intends to be in the Church to watch the class and present the new Shield.
